Background: Allen Iverson was born on June 7th, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia,
where many days during his childhood they spent days without water and
electricity for failing to pay bills. This is one reason that he went to
the NBA early; to get his mom out of the projects. Growing up he went to
Bethel High School, located in Hampton, where he was a great Point Guard
and Tailback(football). But when he decided to go to college he played
basketball. Before he went to college he was sentenced to spend time in
jail for taking part in a fight at a bowling alley, which made him miss
out on a scholarship from Kentucky, but if he had gone there he might not
be the player he is now.

And when he started to play ball for Coach John Thompson at
Georgetown University, the fans in the stands would chant "Jailbird". But
after they saw how well he produced they shut up. While he was atteneding
Gtown University, he amassed quite a number of awards: Two Big East
Defensive Player of the Year Awards, BE Rookie of the year, 1995-96 BE
All-Tournament 1st Team, and won a Gold Medal representing the US at the
World University Games held in Japan over the 1995 summer.

Allen was born June 7th, 1975 in Hampton, Virginia. His mother, Ann, was only 16 when she had him, and his father left soon after he was born. Ann struggled to bring in enough money to support herself and Allen. They sometimes went without water and electricity. Allen was very good in not just basketball, but also in football. He was Virginia High School Player of the Year in both sports and won a state championship in both sports (pretty good huh?). On February 13th, 1993, Allen was involved in a bowling alley brawl. He spent four months in jail. This scared away many colleges to give Allen a basketball scholarship. But Georgetown coach John Thompson decided to give Allen a shot and the rest, as they say, is history.
